DEFENCE MATTERS
A CASE OF HARDSHIP STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES ALLEN. I Sir James Allen (Minister for Defence) stated in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon that the hon. member for Napier (Mr J- Vigor Brown) had raised a question some days ago as to tho position of a man Who had applied for extended leave for family reasons, and had been given only one month's leave of absence without pay. Tho case came before tho Military’ Service Board on September 12th, and tho board, on the whole of tho facts, thought that it was not a case for extended leave, hue recommended leave for one month and financial-assistance in regard to rent for his wife to tho amount of 1/s a week. That made her total income £ll per month, as against her Husbands’ previous earnings of £3 a week. Tho board pointed out that tho one month’s leave did not include military pay, and asked the man whether ho wanted; leave in the circumstances, but ho said that ho could easily earn the money during tho month.
