THE NEW ZEALAND EARTHQUAKE. SYDNEY, February 25. The Government Astronomer reports that the New Zealand earthquake was registered in Sydney, but that the record was not What might have been expected from the cabled accounts. The seismic waves caused only a very small displacement here. The centre of the disturbance had most likely occurred in strata directly under the surface. The earthwaves would thus quickly reach the surface and cause considerable damage, but the severity would be felt only locally. The tremor reached hero at fifteen minutes two seconds past 11 o'clock on the morning of the 22nd, and the maximum was reached at eighteen minutes nine seconds past 11. The' largest waves were only of 0.-4 millimetres amplitude.
