BROWN OWL WINS THE HANDICAP. Press Association. v DUNEDIN, February 22. The Dunedin Jockey Ciub's autumn meeting was concluded to-day in showery weather. The attendance was very good, and speculation was brisk, the totaliaator putting through ,£23,196 as, against £lB,628 for the corresponding day last year, making the total for the meeting .251,349 as compared with £41,980 10s last year. Rifle Range and Ngawera showed the way over the first fence, the latter being in charge as they ran to the stand. Rifle Range pecked on landing over th© hurdle in front of .the stand, but quickly recovered. Going to the fence at the mild post Ngawera was leading Warsaw and Rifle Range, the two being about four lengths in front of Redwing, who was a similar distance ahead of St. Kevin and Simon Pure. Along the back St. Kevin was improving his position, but at the far turn Ngawera wae a length ahead of Warsaw, the pair being fully seven lengths clear of Redwing and Bt. Kevin. Turning into the straight the two horses were closing up. Ngawera, however, drew out and won easily by about four lengths from St, Kevin, who beat Warsaw, -Iby half a length. Time, 2min 54 24>sec. Sister Radius and Maple Leaf being the smartest to begin. Special Form lying next* with Sea King and Pilgrim’s Way leading the others. Running round the fai torn Sister Radius and Maple Leaf were
two lengths in front of Pilgrim’s Way and Special Form, with the rest close up. Turnin'- into the straight the field was headed by Sister Radius, who was two lengths ahead of Pilgrims W ay. In the run home Sister , Radius stalled off a challenge by Special Form, winning by a, head, with Pilgrim’s Way tour length* away third. Tune, Imm lu 3-osec. Bulletin was badly leit and Takahau took up the running from Champagne as they passed the live furlongs pobu At the far turn Takahau was leading Champagne by two lengths, with Optinicxorni a similar distance away third. Inumpha'tor, closing up, fourth. Takahau was coming away as the field turned into the straight, but inside the distance Champagne and Triumphator challenged the leader, and the Martian horse went on to win by a length and a half from Champagne, who beat Takahau by threa'qr. a riel's of a length. My Lawyer led to the first turn from Parable and Brown Owl. Racing to th© mile post Brown Owl joined My Lawyer in the lead, Mira and Sombrero bringing up the rear in a closely hunched field. Brown Owl took charge at the seven furlong post with Troon, Tho Cornet, and Tannhauser next. Tho field was still in close order passing tho six furlong post, but My Lawyer had dropped back last, and shortly after Parable also fell away. At the far turn Brown Owl was Hill leading, with Troon, Tho Cornet, Mira, and Tannhauser next, two lengths away coming Ooroniform and Sombrero. Brown Owl landed first into the straight with Troon still in close attendance, and Ooroniform improving his position. The Treadmill filly held her advantage and beat Ooroniform by a length and a half, the latter beating Tannhauser by a head. Time, 2min 19 2-sseo. HOPEFUL HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs; for two-year-old; five furlongs. 1— J. B. Reid’s h o Ogier, by Charlemagne II. —Nautiloid, 8.10 (F. E. Jones) - 1 2 Sir Q. Gilford’s Veritas, 8 (C. Emerson) —2 s—B. Bewcastle’a Aye Aye. 6.7 (RAlso started—3 Fender 8.7, 4 United Service 7.10, 6 Sea Maid 6.7. Sea Maid got chopped out at the start and Veritas led at the far turn from Aye Aye, who was two lengths in front of th© others. The field closed up at the three furlong post and Sea Maid made up some of her lost ground. Veritas and Aye Aye landed into the straight two lengths ahead of Ogier, the other runners being close handy. Xn the run home Ogier came through and won comfortably by two lengths from Veritas, who beat ■ Aye Aye by a length, with Fender well up fourth. Time, Imin. sseo. Red Wing led Waikehau and Peppin past the six furlong post, but running into the far bend Waikehau and Peppin drew out from King Torrent and Red Wing. Turning for home the field closed up somewhat on the leaders, but Waikehau landed into the straight Hear of Kimona, who had come through his field in good style. Steperina got badly away, and Champagne took up the running from Eidelform and Pleasure Bent. At the far turn Champagne was still two lengths in front of Eidelform, then came Tympan and Saietypin, with Caraid DUeas. wno nulled up shortly after, last. Eidelform. ranged alongside Champagne at the turn into the straight, but insidp .the distance Thrax came with a great run. and Pleasure Bent also put in a . claim. Thrax won by half a length from Pleasure Bent, Britain Crown being close up third, lime, Imin 19sec. WINGATUI HACK, Of 150 sovs; seven furlongs. I—JT R. Also started—s Obsono 9.1, G Thistledown 9.1. 8 Mahuri 8.7, 3 St. Petersburg 8.3, 2 Rook Perry 7.10. Bock Ferry got away well from a moving start. Mahuri being a bit slow to find his feet. At the six furlong post Obsono had joined Book Ferny. the two being a couple of lengths in. front of Medallist and Mumura. Bock Ferry and Obsono were still in front at the far bond, with tho field closing up, with tho exception of St. Petersburg, who was two lengths in the rear. At the home turn Medallist raced up to the leaders, and he and Mumura were in charge when fairly in the straight. Medallist then drew away and won comfortably by three-quarters of a length from Mumura. who headed San Severe by three lengths. Time. Imin 31 l-ssec.
