INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY. The heavy rain which fell in Wellington on Friday night, after a fairly long spell of dry weatfier, greatly interfered with the success of the intorprovincial match between Canterbury and Wellington. All arrangements were complete for playing- tlio games on the I'horndon courts, but these had been rendered unfit for play, and so the Brougham Hill asphalt courts had to bo utilised. The Canterbury team was much weaker than usual, and, with the added disadvantage of having to play on asphalt, went under. The teams were: Canterbury.—Messrs OlHvier, Gosa, Pearse, Greenwood, Sheppard, and Seay, Mrs Ballantyne, Misses Bloxam, Cotton, and McDougall. Wellington.—Messrs Swanston, Fisher, Peacock, Brown, White-Parsons, and Smythe, Misses Travers, Nunneloy, V r an Staveren, and Mrs Goldie. A notable feature of the day’s play was Swanstou’s defeat by Ollivier, the New Zealand champion being beaten in two straight sets. White-Parsons was the only other Wellington player to lost his match, being defeated by Sheppard. Tho scores were: Men’s Singles. * G. Ollivier (Canterbury) defeated R. N. K. Swapston (Wellington), 6—4, 6—l. W. Goss (Canterbury) lost to F. M. B. Fisher (Wellington), 6—2, 5—7, 3—6. W. Pearse (Canterbury) lost to J. C. Peacock (Wellington), I—6, B—6. Greenwood (Canterbury) lost to H. W. Brown (Wellington), 3—6, 4—6. W. Sheppard (Canterbury) defeated H. White-Parsons (Wellington), 6—2, 3—6, 6—4. Seay (Canterbury) lost to G. Smythe (Wellington), 3—6, 6—-7. Men’s Doubles. Ollivier and Goss (Canterbury) lost to Peacock and Fisher (Wellington), 7—9, 3 Pearse and Greenwood (Canterbury) lost to Swanston and Brown (Wellington), 4,—6, 3—6.
