NEWTOWN CARSHEDS
ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT. IMPROVEMENTS IN MANAGEMENT. Lengthy discussion, took place in the City Council last evening on a report by the Tramways Board in regard to the ■working of the Newtown car sheds. This report stated that the superintendent and tbe leading hands were found on examination to ho competent for the satisfactory carrying out of ■ their duties. “As previously reported the car shed depot is not satisfactorily arranged, owing to the fact that all work is carried on in the running shed, there being no properly arranged and separate budding for repairs work of the more important character and for new works. • . . .At “The board is of opinion that there should be an official, acting as deputy or assistant to the car shed superintendent, and is further of opinion that the. most satisfactory man in the, establishment for this position is J. Waters-, at present employed as leading fitter. i ■ - , “Such an appointment would result in closer supervision of all work done, and would relieve the superintendent of attendance to minute, details. ‘ ‘Waters has, however, tendered his resignation, and , purposes leaving, for England next month. .Ho has stated his willingness: to return if. a. satisfactory appointment is available for him. He also asks that in such event the corporation .should f contribute to his expenses. “The board recommends that on his return he be offered tbe position of assistant car shed superintendent at a salary of £220 per ■ annum, and that his duties be to generally assist the car shed superintendent in such manner as the latter shall direct. In the event of the council dieciding to contribute to Waters’ expenses, it should be distinctly on the understanding that whatever sum is to be paid shall be handed' . over on his return ' and again taking up duty. INTERNAL MANAGEMENT. “The board is also of opinion that the storekeeper at the car abed should be under the control of the superintendent, instead of as at present under the control, of the storekeeper at the head office. The car shed storekeeper should he required to account for all stores to the superintendent, and keep the latter fully posted as to quantity of stores issued. No requisition for stores to be given effect to without the approval of the supenn-, tendent. AIL traffic stores should be transferred to Thorndon offices after the whole of the latter budding is made available for the department. The storekeeper at the car shed should observe the same regulation regarding holidays, etc., as the officials at this branch. “If the above proposals are carried into effect, the board is of opinion that after the new repair shop is completed the work of this branch wdl be carried on more satisfactorily than at present. The hoard, at the same time, desires to state that the work at the depots has been carried out by the superintendent with great attention to the interests of the corporation, hut that the great increase in the number of j cars beyond what was originally provided necessitates the alterations therein recommended being carried into effect.” . After a long discussion the council adopted the report, and agreed with a recommendation from the committee that a minimum contribution of £25 be made towards the expenses of Mr Waters, the amount to be subject to revision on his submitting his report after his return to New Zealand.
