Mr Francis R. H. Drake, secretary of tho Scott Antarctic expedition; Lieutenant V. L. A. Campbell, R.N. (leader Of the eastern party); -and Mr B. M. Debenham leave Wellington today by tho Moeraki for Sydney, en route to England, by the Otranto.'Mr G. Nelson, one of tho biologists to the expedition, also left Christchurch last night for Wellington. He goes Heme by the Terra Nova. Commander Evans will leave Lyttelton for Wellington next Tuesday to meet Mrs Scott, who will arrive from San Francisco by the Aorangi on Thursday, 27th inst. Lieutenant Bruce, brother of Mrs Scott, will also come north next Wednesday to meet his sister. Mrs Scott and Lieutenant Bruce will go to Sydney to join the P. and O. steamer Medina for England. Commander Evans and Mrs Evans will leave next week for Sydney to join the Otranto for London. Mr William Whiteford has been appointed a surveyor of ships for the Dominion. The Hon; D. Buddo, M.P., has left for Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay, where he ,-wil! spend a few weeks’ holiday. Mr A. T. Duncan, of 1 Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers,' has been, advised unofficially of his success in his final LL.B. examination. . The Revi-G. -J. H. Dobson and Rev. G. At a meeting of the committee last evening, Mr C. N. Baejertz and Mr Harold Gregson were appointed the judges for this year’s festival of tho New Zealand Competitions Society. Nows has reached Woodville that Mb James Holder, ■ who went a trip round tho world about six months ago, died in Germany last November. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr H. R. Holder. Woodville, who owned Riverside estate some years ago. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes returns to 4 Wellington from south this morning. The Hon. W. H. Herries, who attended the native gathering at Jerusalem, will also return to .Wellington from Wanganui this morning. The .Hon. W, Fraser is inspecting the district to the eastward of Ingercargfll, and will, remain at Invercargill over the weekend. The Hon. Dr. Pomare is a*. Wanganui, and other Cabinet Ministers are in Wellington. The RovJ J. H. White, who has been in charge of’ the Methodist Church in the Eltham district during the past eighteen months, will be leaving for Wellington early in April next, having been 'appointed to take charge of the Taranaki’street church there. Mr Whit© will (says tho “ Eltham Argus ) be greatly missed not only by his own flock but by members of other denominations to whom he has endeared hmoelf by his genial nature during hia stay in Patea. Mr White will be succeeded by. the Rev. G- Bridgman. The Bing has appointed Lord Willingden to. be Governor of Bombay in - -succession to Sir George Clarke, who will retire next April. As Mr i reeman jisvwm Lord Willingdon was for some years a Liberal M.P., first for Hastings, and altemards for Bodmin, Cornwall. Born in 1866, a grandson of. the -first ■ Visoount. Hampden* he was educated at Eton,' where he was captain of the eleven, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He played cricket four seasons for his university, served as aide-de-camp to Lord Brassey when he was Governor of Victoria, has had military aad yeomanry, experience, has been secretary of Liberal organisations, and baa served at Court as a lord-in-waiting. Lady Willingdon is the, youngest daughter of Lord Brassey, an ex-Governor of Vic- : toria. Mr George ' Spriggma, the. newlyelected president of the Now Zealand ‘ Fire ; Brigades’. Association, is a man .who has.well won the honour that has -been conferred upon him. He was elected a member of the Wanganui , Volunteer Fire Brigade under the captaincy of Mr T. D. Cummins, with Mr F- M. Spnrdle as lieutenant, in the year 1884. Hie proved himself a zealous 'fireman, keen to gain experience, and always attentive to his work. From the outset he gave promise of becoming an efficient officer.: He has been in turn fireman; foreman, lieutenant, captain, and superintendent, and now (says the -Wanganui “ Chronicle ”) his' long and valuable service has leen crowned by the. highest honour it is possible for. the fire-fighters of New Zealand to be* stow upon him—the presidency of tho National -Association. . He . is, of course, the possessor of the gold star awarded . to men who have completed twenty-five years of service. In -consequence of the death of Mr Elliott, late Collector of Customs all ' Christchurch,- several promotions and transfers will be made forthwith, in the Customs Department. Mr W. Rose, landing surveyor at Wellington, becomes collector at Tunaxu; Mr E. T., Maclanrin, landing surveyor* at Christchurch,, will be transferred in the same capacity to Wellington. Ms J-- Wyatt,, collector at Invercargill, becomes collector at Christchurch} Ms W. J. Hawley, collector at Timaru, becomes collector at Invercargill; Mr W.. Howarth, collector at Greymouth, is. to be landing surveyor at Christchurch;: Mr T. R. Herd, senior land* ing waiter at Auckland, becomes collector at Greyinouth; Mr J,. E. Nichol, clerk at Nelson, is to be transferred as junior landing waiter to Wellington; Mr W. H. Fisher, clerk at Auckland, is to be a junior landing waiter at Wellington; Mr E.
