Sir Ernest Shackletou has reaffirmed his intention of leading another expedition to the Antarctic to engage in scientific exploration. Ho said me loss of human lives was nothing if thereby one could add ouo iota to the sum of human knowledge. SCOTT RELIEF FUND AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENTS’ CONTRIBUTIONS. ' MELBOURNE, February 19. Mr Fisher, Federal Prime Minister, has approved the suggestion of Mr Hughes, the Attorney-General, that the Commonwealth and State Governments should contribute to the Scott fund. The States are now being approached on the subject. A DEFINITE STATEMENT ASKED FOR. TRIBUTES TO PETTY-OFFICER EVANS., (Received February 19, IEBO pun.) LONDON, February 19. Newspaper funds total £BOOO. Mr Barrie, me novelist, who is godfather to Peter Scott, in a letter to the newspapers, asks the Government for a definite statement of the funds required, as there is confusion in the public mind, preventing free subscription. He believes that lord Cuxzon has made an error, and that the liabilities of the expedition are £12,000, not £30,000.
The “Daily Telegraph” says that Scott sank thirty thousand pounds of hia private fortune in fitting out the expedition. j Mr Austen Chamberlain _ suggests a monument to Scott and his comrades in St, Paul’s, to be executed by Mrs Scott. Lady Ellison Macartney unites to Mrs Evans paying a tribute to her brother’s great admiration for Evans. Lord Charles Beresford writes a similar letter expressing respect and admiration. (Received February 20, L 35 an.) SYDNEY, February 19. The various funds for Scott have reached £2494. CAPTAIN OATES A FELLOW-OFFICER’S TRIBUTE. SYDNEY, February 19. A fellow-officer with Captain Oates in the Inniakilling Dragoons says that Oates was the most stalwart man and the best officer bo ever knew. Ho> could get more out of his men than any other, and was clever beyond the ordi-> nary. He was a great geologist; nothing was too hard for him. CANADIAN TRIBUTES TO SCOTT. (Received February 19, 11.30 p-m.) February 19. The Dominion PaHlament adopted » resolution of condolence in the death of Scott, Sir. Wilfrid Laarier and Mr Borden paid impressive tributes. At the meeting of Victoria College Council last night a motion of condolence with the relatives of the ill-fated Antarctic ‘ party was passed. A subcommittee was appointed to frame an appropriate tribute on the subject.
