ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
Press Association. PALMERSTON. February 19. This afternoon T. Rogers, an expressman, was driving to tho river, presumably for firewood, _ and when near the bottom of Painatna street, where it turns towards tho river, the cart appeared to give a heavy jolt and the driver fell from his seat on to tho rood. Both wheels of the express passed over him. The accident was observed by men engaged in a gravel pit near by, and they went to tho unfortunate man’s assistance, but Rogers died before medical aid arrived. •
A painful accident which occurred to a young wharf labourer named Guy Cockburn yesterday morning resulted in his having to be removed to tho hospital. Cockburn was working on the forward hatch of the steamer Mannb, which was lying at tho Queen’s Wharf. A sling of luggage was being raised from the hold, when it struck the man ou the back, and ho was knocked over the side of tho ship on to the wharf, a_ distance of about twenty feet. Assistance was given by Drs Pigeon and Robertson, and it was found that Cockburn had one of the fingers on his right hand broken, and his right side badly crushed. Whilst working a punching machine at the Empire Box-making Company’s Siaes yesterday afternoon, Olos H. er got one of bis hands caught, and a finger was cut badly. Ho was taken to tho hospital, where the finger had to bo amputated. DiUner, who is twenty-five years of age, resides at 99, Tasman street.
