Private a* lances from Australia report that a big movement is afoot (lor the close, r union of the Merchant 'Service Guihi and the Institute of ,Marine Engineers, for their mutual advancement and protection. Tho project, it is understood, has already (gained ground 1 , in New Zealand, and la conference I w tween members representing the Guild and the Marino Engineers’ Instibnibo will probably be arranged within a few weeks. From what can be gathered the scheme’concerns tbe, immanent for the betterment of working' conditions, and increases in wages . on the part of those dissatisfied with the present state of affairs. This wil'l b© the first time since tho inoepti* m of the two bodies that they have t oiken active steps to he brought closer together.
