(Received February 18. 10.50 p.m.) LONDON, February 18. Tho wheat market is quiet and firm owing to the less favourable political outlook. SOUTHERN GRAIN MARKETS Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. Wheat is selling fairly freely, millers taking advantage of tho offers of early tliresued wheat, as it is in l such excellent condition. The general range of prices is:—'Tuscan 3s Su, Hunters 3s 5Jd, and Pearl 3s 6d at country stations. Hunters is unusually scarce, as, owing to the weather, littie winter Wheat was sown* \ Oats are somewhat difficult to procure, as growers are not satisfied with the ruling prioes, and merchants, in the absence of an outlet, are unable to advance their: limits. Though not in any active demand, prim© malting barley is saleable and up to 4s will be paid for really prime samples, which dro somewhat scarce. There is no change to report in. other lines, FRUIT AND PRODUCE WELLINGTON MARKETS. Continued frbquent and heavy supplies ol apples, pears, peaches, plums, and nectarines are reaching the market, with the result that values are still ruling at nominal levels; at the moment Chore is no immediate prospect of an improvement showing, but of course this must take place immediately there is. any failing off in tha volume coming forward of any particular variety ol fruit. .In the ordinary course plums and peaches as well as nectarines, should CJiow a distinct advance. Auckland is sending large quantities of several descriptions of dessert apples, but no doubt these will ease off in supply owing to the low rates obtaining in this city. Householders would find the present time a very opportune one for securing their requirements for jam purposes. The usual weekly shipment of fruits from Sydney is due to-day, and will no doubt comprise a small quantity of pears, passion fruit and grapes. . as well as Messina lemons. No Australian lemons nor Auckland-grown are yet on the market, and with the hot weather prevailing a good demand is. being experienced; at the fame time fairly large quantities of Mediterranean lemons nave been available. POTATOES AND ONIONS. The local market is still being supplied from the Auckland district as weil as from other parts of tho North Island, as South Island tubers are not yet ready to come on the market. The crop in the south is reported to be good this season, and forward contracts have been made, so it is reported, at 90s to lOOs per ton, f.o.b. The future of the market greatly depends upon what action the Commonwealth will take in regard to New Zealand potatoes. If • it should require to import, it will result in a hardening tendency here. Present values are to £8 per ton. During the past few days there has been some excitement in the onion market, as Australian merchants have been operating for delivery up to the end of April. At the moment there are no onions to be had in the South Island, as ail stocks have been bought up. There is a good demand also for pickling onions at Al2 to .113 per ton; table onions are quoted at £7 to £S per ton. ' OTHER VEGETABLES. For choice cauliflowers, parsnips, swedes, pumpkins, green peas and pie melons there is an excellent inquiry in . the local market, other lines are in supply practically sufficient for requirements.
