A Press Association message from Melbourne states that the Medina's New Zealand passengers include: Misses Dean and Cohen; Messrs Thompson, Davis, Rose, Franklin, Campbell, and Sir H. Rider Haggard. A handsomely-bound copy of the Bible was presented yesterday to the Rev. G. Knowles Smith as a memento of Ms occupancy of the presidential chair of the Primitive Methodist Church for the last year of its separate existence. Mr Farquahar Stewart, for some years manager of the WaiM Extended Gold Mining Company’s mine, has been appointed mine manager of the Ross Goldfields Company’s property, lie will leave for the South Island immediately upon the appointment ot his successor. Mr Stuart Seddon, who has been completing his architectural studies in England and France, returns to Wellington to-day by the Manuka. Mr Seddon, who came second with Mr W. Turnbull in the design competition for the new Houses of Parliament, has gained valuable experience in his profession during his absence from Wellington. The death is reported from Manaia of Mr Thomas Shelton Scown, an old pioneer, in his eightieth year. Ho was born in London in 1832, and came to New Zealand 57 years ago, landing at Wellington. Proceeding to Wanganui, he took ,up farming, remaining there twenty years, and afterwards moved to Patea district, where he resided until a short time ago. During the Maori war he was (says the “Hawera Star”) engaged carting supplies for the troops, and served right up the coast. He had some thrillin gexperiences, being burnt out by the Maoris on two or three occasions. He could tell many thrilling stories of those troublesome times. Ho leaves a family of thirteen—fleaemeons and six daughters.
