AUCKLAND NOTES
Special to the "Times.” AUCKLAND, February 18. Aucklanders experienced a very rough time through the failures of Worcester, Goldsize, and Maxwell at the Taranaki meeting, and it will be a long time before they recover from tno general clean up they received. J. Kean, who has only been figuring in the race-cards as an owner a short time, won a double with the Wainki gelding Phosphorous at Rotorua last' week. Up till a few weeks ago the gelding was an inmate of F- McMenamin’s stable, but is now trained by W. Mobberley. Maxwell, who ran third in the Welter to Katua at the Taranaki meeting, looks none the worse for his trip, and wiH contest the South Auckland Cup on Friday. The big gelding can gallop all right, but he generally lets his backers down, and maybe he is not game. Tripoli, who has a little pace, may get on the winning list at the South Auckland meeting, where she will not be meeting any Toreadors. The latter was cruelly treated in being asked to give 71b to Apellon, and it was no surprise to see Mr Harris’s gelding withdrawn. After a long spell of outs, the pretty Lucille picked up a race at the Rotorua meeting, hut the company was very poor and little merit attached to the performance. So far, the St. Paul gelding Prophet is standing up to his work well, and there is every reason to expect this fine hurdler to stand a preparation. When J. Chaafe returned from the Egmont meeting he brought back the gelding Nukuhau, and the horse figures amongst tho nominations for the Te Aroha J.C. meeting. La Reina is getting through her exercises at Ellerslie In good style, and, although nothing definite has yet been decided upon, it is more than likely that the daughter of Souit will fulfil her Wanganui Cup engagement. Her usual pilot, J. Buchanan, had fils shoulder put out through My Lady falling with him at the Gisborne meeting, and another rider will have to be found for Mr Duder’s mare. Self, a two-year-old sister to Bleriot, is doing improving work, and may also make the trip, but she is hardly likely to be able to cope with her more seasoned opponents in the South Auckland Cup. On Saturday Jolie Fille will have 81b less in the saddle than 'when she ran second to Semolina in the Eotorua Cup, and the difference in the weights may have the effect of reversing positions. Blue Garment is hitting out in hue style, and judging by the way he reels off half-miles he should be hard to beat this week. After competing on the opening day of tho Taranaki meeting one of Worcester’s legs filled, and the gelding could not be started on the second day. Bleriot is now getting through steady exercise, but the crack filly has been having an easy time, and it will take E. J. Rae all his time to get her ready for Easter.
