EASTER CARNIVAL
Arrangements in connection with the Easter Carnical, to be held at Newtown Park, are well in hand. Eleven large sub-committees ’ are at work, in addition to the executive. One of the features of the carnival will undoubtedly be the side-shows. At a meeting held on Eriday evening, Councillor Frost occupied the chair. In addition to fifteen already on the committee of this section, the following names were added: Messrs A. W . Kitto, H. Seaton, M. Robertson, S. Goldblott, B: Barnett, J. Teague, F. Hatcher, W. Lange, J. Rose, A, Fortune, The commander of the Boy Scouts offered to supply as many scouts as would be required, and the offer was accepted with thanks. Mr J. Hislop reported having interviewed Mr Bupkley, of the Telegraph Department, who had consented to exnibit a complete wireless model, and also an automatic telephone. The various side-shows have been allotted to the charge of the following ■ members of the committee; Aunt Sally (2 shows), R. B. Orange, N. Barnett. Shooting gallery: StaffSergeant Major Millett, Morns Tube: Mr J. Teague. Hoop La: Major Hughes and Mr Lange, Wireless Telegraphic, Automatic Telephone, Models and Slot Machines: Mr J. P* Luke. Peg La: Mr P. W. Andrews. Guessing Competitions: Styeop, Mil A. Fortune. Nail-driving: Mr J. h. Atkins. The box ball, Jack .Johnson, Punch and Judy, golf putting, fortune telling, and several competitions are to be allotted at a. meeting to be held on Thursday evening. Prizes for the various competitions are required; also the assistance of a further number of gentlemen. The secretary of this section, Mr Paape, will he pleased to hear from any willing to assist in the direction indicated. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The Executive of the Easter Carnival met .last night, the Mayor presiding. There were present Mesdames D. McLaren, J. P. Firth, F. Marsh, J. P. Luke, W. H. P. Barber, C. J. Knight, M. Russell, Miss Bland, Councillors Frost and 1' itzgerald, Messrs C. G. Wilson, A. A. Marryatt, A. A. Paape, and F. Marsh. . The Wellington Football Association asked that their Wellington-Auckland bovs’ representative match be put on at"the Park on Faster Saturday as an attraction. The matter was referred to the Sports Committee. The action of the chairman in declining the offer of the Denhard Bread Company to conduct a guessing competition for the carnival was approved. The following sub-committees reported excellent progress to date: i_,yall Bay-Gala Day, Physical Drill displays, school children’s exercises, decorated procession, various stalls, side shows, grounds, concert, art union, and advertising. The Sports' Committee recommended that the offer of the New Zealand University Tournament Committee to hold their championship tournament at Newtown Park on Faster Monday on payment to them of £35, be accepted. The recommendation was agreed to, but it was stipulated by the executive that the Sports Committee shall go thoroughly ino the question of complimentary tickets for the competitors. . , , In connection with the boxing exhibition on the Thursday before Easter, the chairman reported that the Bishop of Wellington and some of the Anglican ministers had waited on him, urging that this entertainment, and in fact, all carnival arrangements, be discontinued during Holy M ee k- The question was referred to the Sports Committee to endeavour to arrange the matter with the Boxing AssociaIt was reported that the visitor s reception committee w’ould hold a meeting on. Friday evening next to arrange their programme. The executive decided that they could not see their way to accept the offer of Messrs George and Kersley to arrange for an essay on “Wellington as a holiday resort.” The secretary was instructed to confer with Dr. Newman on the question of Ins offer to donate £lO 10s as a prize for an essay on “The natural beauties of Melhng ton citv and harbour. A special finance committee was set up to control expenditure, consisting of the Mayor, Councillor Frost Messrs C. G. Wilson, C. R. SmitH, and A. A. “colours for the carnival were fixed as black and gold—Wellington s sporting colours.
