PROTECTION OF CATHOLICS.
STATEMENT BY MR BIRRELL. . LONDON, February 16. Mr Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, In a speech at Warrington, said that the debate in the House of Lords showed that the idea of Home Rule had dawned on their lordships’ minds; The Government, he added, would proceed with Home Rule. It would not shoot Ulstermen, but would at all costs protect the Catholics in Ulster from violence, and whatever steps were taken to protect them would receive British support.
