AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON EASILY WINS THE SHIELD. McHOLM BREAKS HAMMER- ~~ -'THROWING RECORD. Auspicious conditions prevailed for the holding of the twenty-fourth championship meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon,, .The track was in splendid order, the slight rain of the previous night freshening it up beautifully. There was an attendance of about 5000 spectators. Amongst the visitors wore the Mayor (Mr D. McLaren) and Mrs McLaren. WELLINGTON’S PROWESS. Five years have elapsed since a previous championship meeting was held in Wellington. Wellington then were easy winners. In 1909 and 1910 Wellington was again the loading province. Last year Southland carried off premier honours, but this year Wellington again finds herself on top, and her representatives the holders of the championship shield. This distinction the Wellington men achieved easily, their total points being 68 as against 32 obtained by Auckland and Southland, who tied for second position. The points scored by the various provinces are as follow: ‘ Wellington 68 ' Auckland 16 Southland 16 Canterbury 7 Otago /6 A mere glance at tho figures serves to ! show that Wellington's athletic prowess has in no way declined, and that on her own ground Wellington takes some beating. Of course, allowance must be made for the fact that several previous sportsmen of other districts were absent, notably R. "Opie (Canterbury), R. P. Mitchell (Otago), R. Eggleston (Otago), and G. K. Hill,(Auckland). Though there were sixty-one competitors participating, it cannot be said that from the spectators’ standpoint the meeting was a very interesting' one. It was rather the reverse, and! was not by any means as good as the Wellington provincial meeting held a fortnight ago. The competition in some, of the events was certainly keen, but in the main Wellington had things own way. THE BEST RACE. The best event of the afternoon was the 440 yards championship. In this A. W. Dormer (Auckland), the cham-pion-of 1912, and C. S. Thomas (Canterbury) scratched, leaving the issue to lie between J. Wilton (Wellington), L. - Mark (Auckland), E. E. Fisher (Wellington), R. Swinney (Otago),,N. C. Saunders (Southland) and A. T. Duncan (Wellington). The start was a good one, Wilton quickly getting into the lead. He was closely followed by Mark, and the pair fought out a great •ucc. When about 100 yards from home it appeared as if Mark.were gong to pass Wilton.. The latter, how-v-W, extended himself to the utmost, • <1 ran in a,few feet ahead of Mark, i h. i was followed by Fisher.. Wilton’s . .no. 51 l-6sec, was 4-sths of a second I tier than the standard, and was only hir-fifths of a second below the New ■ .r.iliuid amateur'record for the disby W. T. Maophevsrm in 1891, and L. B, Webster n 1903. The final of the 100 yard.--hampkmship provided a spirited contest between A. T. Duncan (Wellington), L. Mark (Auckland), and N. C. Saunders (Southland), and Keddell (Southland). Mark made matters very warm, and he came in only six inches behind Duncan. Keddell had bad luck in the 440 yards hurdles through falling over a hurdle just near the finish. This put him out of count. The race was won by P. E. Doyle (Wellington), R. McKenzie, another Wellingtonian, being second. Only Wellington, men entered for the one-mile and three mile walks, thus detracting greatly from the interest in these tacos. D. Cashman had no difficulty in retaining his title to tho three-mile event, .and he annexed the one-mile as well. H. E. Kerr (Wellington), who won the mile championship last year, did not enter this time. J. Beatson (Otago> - and A. W. Dormer (Auckland) did not experience mnch trouble In 1 winning the three-mile and one-mile flat: races respectively. Dormer also won the Half-mile Championship, beating D. Binnio (Wellington) by a couple -of yards. The winner annexed the championship in tho half-mile at Southland in, 1912. , L. McKay did well for Wellington in several events. He secured from F. Hazlett (Southland) the title to the Hop, Step, and Jump Championship, beat G. Giller 'Southland) for the Pole Vault Championship, and came second in putting the shot. J. MoHolm (Mfcllington), who won the Throwing-the-Hammer Championship, broke his own Austra-lian-and New Zealand record of 135 ft am. obtained in 1912, by throwing 143 feet 8 inches. This was a very. good performance, tho standard, 130 feet, being well passed. Standards were eclipsed in tho following events: 1 Three-mile walk-championship, 23min fD. Cashman, Wellington, 22min 12seo). . Long jump championship. 21ft (G. P. Keddell, Southland, 21ft 9iin). Throwing the hammer championship. 130 ft (J. McHolm, Wellington, 143 ft Sin): . 44Qyda championship, 52seo (J. Wilton, Wellington, 51 1-Ssec). CHAMPIONS. Championships were obtained by tho following competitors: A. T. Duncan (Wellington), 220yds. D. Cashman (Wellington, holder), Uiree-mile walk. W. de Thier (Canterbury), putting the' Shot. A. W. Dormer (Auckland, holder), mile. !■. I’. Keddell (Southland, holder), 1 J'b.-tls hurdles. L. AlcKay (Wellington), pole vault, r. E. Doyle (Wellington), high jump. .V. T. Duncan (Wellington), lOQyds. A. AT. Dormer (Auckland), one mile Ant. , G. P. Keddell (Southland, holder), ’ong jump. J. McHolm (Wellington), throwing the hammer. , L. McKay (Wellington), hop, step and jump. D.
