THE MAPOURIKA
RESUMES RUNNING TO-MORROW
After some weeks’ inaction at Wellington, due to trouble with her firemen, .the Mapourika will resume her old running to the West Coast this week, the difficulty having been overcome and a settlement reached satisfactory to both sides. During the period of the vessel’s idleness, trade on the West Coast has been somewhat disorganised and the travelling public put to considerable inconvenience. The original complaint of the firemen was that the Mapourika was a hard ship to work, and they contended that extra* bauds were wanted. The followlowing is tho new arrangement upon which the steamer is to be worked: Tti lieu of tho former scale of three firemen, two trimmers and three greasers, the company is to employ six firemen and three greasers, at the rate of £lO a month. It was agreed that tho power residing in _ the Minister of Marine under section 67 of the Shipping and Seamen Amendment Act. 1909, shall, if necessary, be exercised to secure enforcement of tho agreement, which has been signed and ratified by representatives of both parties. . . The Mapourika will be recommissioned to-day, and will sail for Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth to-morrow. Tho conference was held at the suggestion of the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, who recently visited the West Coast, and promised to use his influence in effecting a settlement of the dispute.
