INQUESTS

Press Association. INVERCARGILL,' February 15. At an inquest to-day regarding the death of Alfred William Browett, found dead in a bedroom at a boardinghouse, it was stated that deceased had been fourteen years in the army, and had served in Egypt, India, and Africa. The medical evidence showed that death was due to aneurism of the aorta, and a verdict to that effect was returned. An inquest on the death of John Maloney, killed by the fall of gravel while working in a pit, was held today. The evidence of a brother showed that deceased was using a pick at the bottom of the pit when the whole bank came away, burying him. When he was dug out life was extinct. The coroner adjourned the inquiry to receive suggestions from the county engineer regarding taking precautions to minimise the danger to those engaged in gravel pits. AUCKLAND February 15. The coroner held an inquiry on Saturday into the death of Roderick Percy Paine, twenty years of age, who died at the hospital as the result of having taken poison. The coroner intimated to the jury that there was no reason to suspect temporary insanity, as the lad at first denied having taken the poison, which indicated deliberation. A - verdict was returned that deceased did feloniously hill himself.
