RESTRICTIVE MEASURES CONDEMNED. SYDNEY, February 14. Speaking at a function in celebration of General Yuan Shih Kai’s acceptance of the Presidency of the Chines© Republic, a leading Chinese merchant, in condemning Australia’s restrictive measures, said that as Chinese became more enlightened the Commonwealth" would promptly find that the President _ "would ask it to adopt a more conciliatory method of treating them, otherwise Australian goods would not. find a place in the Chinese markets. A year ago China was regarded as fair game for other nations; to-day some of the same nations were watching with the greatest interest the trend of affairs in China.
