AN ASSAULT CASE
INCIDENT OF SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE. An incident arising out of the strike of the slaughtermen at Ngahaurangswas the appearance before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday of Hugh Steffert on a charge of assaulting Harold Victor Morgan on February 10th. Chief-Detective Broberg said that defendant was one of the butchers out on strike. Complainant, who was a general labourer employed at the Ngahauranga Meat Works, knocked off work on - the •10th inst., and proceeded along the main road to his home at Johnsomrillo. He met accused and remarked to him, “Good-day, Hughio.” Steffert made. an insulting replv, upon which Morgan said he was employed in the “guttie” works and hot with the other men who had struck. Steffert again mad« objectionable comments and complainant walked away. ■ Accused then struck him on the head, with astick, inflicting a scalp wound about an inch long. His Worship fined Steffert £3, in default fourteen, days’ imprisonment.
