CHESS
The following game was ployed in tha championship tournament held recently at the City of London Chess Club as reported in the “Westminster Gazette’’:
The form of the above variation 5 P to Q 3, although considered nowadays too slow, is nevertheless troublesome to tho second player. The Fianchetto Defence G...P to QKt3 having its drawbacks, the alternative 6... 8 to K2 may be adopted, Black manoeuvres too timidly. After 10 B to B2 he could have advanced at onca 10.. .P to Q 4, and 11... P to Kt 4 would have prevented White’s P to KB4, and ho might have had time for Kt to K 3 and Kt to Kt 3, or some other way according ito White’s continuation. As played he lost time with the ineffectual 12.. .R to QKt sq, and later on with 16.., Kt to KIM, White massing his forces in tho meantime on the open KB file: but judiciously changing tactics immedi? ately with an assault in the centre. All his forces being massed for the final attack, he began it with 27. P to K 5, and after 29. Kt to B 4 Black's position, became untenable. The game is an instructive specimen of the Buy Leper,, illustrating its latent force even in tbs. slow variation adopted by White. PROBLEMS. (No. 3.—By H. Shaw.) Black (throe pieces).

No. I. 1... K to Q 7. any move; 2...Kt or P mates accordingly. No. 2.—1... R to Kit sq, K to Q eqv 2...E to E eq, any move; 3... R to E 3 mates. A pretty idea—three Rooks' moves.
