MEXICAN REVOLT
UNITED STATES’ FORCES READY. WASHINGTON, February 12. A United States expeditionary force of three thousand men is ready to depart for Mexico. A force of marines is also in readiness. A FIERCE ENGAGEMENT. HUNDREDS KILLED IN THE STREETS. MEXICO CITY. February 12. The Federal troops reopened the battle, attacking the arsenal at daylight. A fierce engagement followed. Hundreds were killed in the streets. The rebels turned the Young Men’s Christian Association building into a fortress, where, under cover, they fusiladed the palace with machine guns. They set numbers of buildings on fire. The conflagration is still raging. The British Legation was underfire.’ The Federals placed a battery of artillery near there in order to afford protection. ' GENERAL DIAZ REFUSES ARMISTICE. RAIN OF BULLETS THROUGHOUT » DAY. (Received February 13, 9.55 p.m.) MEXICO CITY, February 13. . The Diaz tactions here have united with the Orozco revolutionists in the northern States to prosecute the revolt against President Madero. The British and other Ambassadors were called to the national palace at noon and conferred with President Madero with a view to securing an armistice. The diplomatic corps also sent a representative to confer with General Diaz, whom they reached after running the gauntlet of a severe rifle fire until General Diaz was able to control the troops. General Diaz refused an armistice. The Government forces made a combined fierce attack in the hope of dislodging the rebels. There was a rain of bullets throughout the day, and several Americans were amongst those killed in the streets. ■ Automobiles under white flags removed women and children to the embassies out of danger.
