WAIRARAPA EGG CIRCLE

ANOTHER SUCCESSETJL YEAR. Mr H. M. Boddington, secretary to the Wairarapa Egg Circle, with headquarters at Masterton, forwards the annual report and balance-sheet showing the transactions for the past year ended January 31st, from which we quote: The year just concluded has been, like the two previous ones, most successful from every point of view. Thirty-five new members were elected during the year, and the membership now stands at 120, as against 101 for tho same period last year. The members are distributed as follow: Maaterton 42, Carterton 35, Greytown 26, Featherston 10, Mauriceville 5, Mangamahoe 2. During the year tho circle’s agent in Wellington (Mr William Jessen) disposed- of 40,835 dozen eggs, which realised £2420 17s 7d, as against 36,613 dozen for £2lOl 6s 8d in the previous year. The eggs were sent from the following branches of the circle: Masterton 19,431 dozen, Carterton 8812 dozen. Greytown 4943 dozen, Featherston 3308 dozen, Mangamahoe 2646 dozen, and Mauriceville 1716 dozen. Included in tho number of eggs sold were 2000 dozen preserved, and the agent has again for this year secured a contract for the supply of 3000 dozen preserved at a guaranteed price of Is 3d per dozen. As one of the objects of the circle, the committee wero again successful in arranging a contract for the supply of poultry feed, and though in some lines the prices have recently dropped, the contract on a whole has proved beneficial to those who have taken advantage of it. At the invitation of the Hutt Egg Supply Company (circle) delegates from this circle attended two conferences of egg circles at the Hutt to discuss matters pertaining to the poultry industry generally. It was suggested that a limited liability company, consisting of poultry keepers only, should be formed to further their interests. It is expected that something definite towards that end will be submitted to those concerned shortly. The committee again have pleasure in recording their appreciation for the

manner in which Mr William Jessen, as agent, has conducted tho business entrusted to him, and desire to impress upon all members the necessity of stamping their eggs legibly and only forwarding them in a thoroughly clean and fresh state, thereby considerably assisting Mr Jessen in his work. For the past month and for the future Mr Jessen has instituted a system of testing every egg by a 50 candle power electric light, and through such action ho hopes to increase the public demand for circle eggs. In the past there were reasons to doubt complaints made against tho quality of some eggs owing to their not being tested, but as the eggs are now tested on receipt by Air .lessen such doubts become nonexistent. As the rule provides penalties in connection with such matters mentioned above, the committee, for tho future welfare of the circle members as a whole, intend seeing that such penalties are enforced on those whoso eggs are detected to be unsatisfactory.
