RIOT IN TOKIO
RIOTERS SABRED ATTEMPTS TO WRECK AND BURN OFFICES. By Telegraph— Press Association— Copyright TOKIO, February 10. Serious rioting has occurred in the vicinity of Parliament. Attempts were made to wreck and burn bureaucratic newspaper offices. Gendarmes sabred the rioters, six of whom were killed or severely wounded. The military aro patrolling the streets. POLICE AND MILITARY CHARGES. MIKADO ISSUES A RESCRIPT. TOKIO. February 11. Tho Mikado, in a rescript, has ordered Marquis Saiouji to try and alleviate the situation in the direction of the abandonment of the censure of the Government. Two members of tho late Cabinet favour compliance; tho others are unwilling to make a compromise. The crowd surrounded the Diet and cheered the arrival, of the Oppositionists who were wearing white roses, and hooted tho Ministerialists. The police made repeated charges and fifteen persons were injured. A rescriiJt. fias been issued suspending tho sitting for three days. Denso crowds assembled and tho police were unablo to cope with them. The military were summoned and stone-throwing occurred. Theh, a renewal of the melee followed. Tho rioters attacked the newspaper offices and the staff replied with revolvers, one rioter being killed. The mob looted tho oil-shops, soaked straw in tho oil, and threw it into tho newspaper offices, which are now guarded. Tho military charged with swords and the mob ‘ was scattered. Sections rioted further afield, burning tramcars anid wrecking police stations. . _ . An armed force protected Prince Kataura’s residence.
