A YOUTHFUL BURGLAR

SENTENCED TO TWELVE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. DETAINED FOR REFORMATIVE TREATMENT. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 10. The youth Edward Charles Banbary. alias John Bandley, eighteen years'or age, who, among other nefarious exploits, escaped from the exercise yard at Auckland police station on January 25th, and was recaptured at Devonport a day or two later, appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Edwards at the Supreme Court to-day on a charge of escaping from custody and five charges of breaking and entering committed on January 20th (two charges) and January 22nd (three charges). Prisoner asked his Honor for another chance, saying he was sorry for what he had done. ■His Honor: You have had so many chances,,young man. If you had only misbehaved yourself once, I would have some reason to believe you when you say you are sorry. You have done the same thing in New South Wales, If you had been sorry then, you would have kept clear of crime here. You have committed so many offences that if I were to sentence you separately on each charge it would take the extent of two or three lifetimes to cover the period. You are a very undesirable boy, and I am sorry you did not stop where you were reared. You have i excuse at all. There is a great demand for boys in New Zealand, and they can do exceedingly well if they choose to, but you preferred to climb up waterpipes into sliops to honest toil. You have got to learn that you cannot act like that in this country. His Honor added he would take prisoner's youth into • account, and would only impose a light sentence —twelve months’ hard labour on each charge, the terms to be concurrent —and would order him to he detained fo ra further term not exceeding five years for reformative treatment.
