SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8. (Before Mr W.' G. Riddell, S.M.) A SERIOUS CHARGE. Alfred Ernest Carter was remanded ' until February 14th on a charge of having used an instrument for a» illegal purpose, and on a charge of having stolen a bicycle. Chief-Detective Broberg said the first charge had been laid because of a statement made by accused to Detective Rawle. Tho detectives doubted the accuracy of the statement, but the matter was one calling for investigation. , CAUGHT BY A CHINAMAN. A sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed on Francis Augustus Thurston on a charge of stealing 22s 6d worth of tobacco from the shop of Sun Young Kee and Co. It appears that accused went to the Chinamen’s shop in Molosworth street and requested to be supplied with some tobacco. About 81b was put on the counter and Thurston picked it Up and dashed off with it. One of the shopmen immediately gave chase. Accused went into a house and came out through another property. Tho Chinaman did not lose sight of the man and he caught him at the Hotel Cecil. STOLE A BICTCLE. James Oliver Armstrong pleaded not guilty to stealing a bicycle belonging to Albert Edward Dimock, but after evidence had been adduced his Worship imposed a sentence of a month’s imprisonment. REMANDED TO TJ.MAKU. William Bain was remanded to appear at Timaru on February 12th on a chargo of stealing a bicycle belonging to John William Soutor. SEAMAN’S FRENCH LEAVE. For haying absented himself without leave from the Remuera, a seaman named Stanley Thomas Cray was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. Accused is to be placed on board It tho vessel sails before the expiration of the term. TO THE ARMY HOME. Joan Daziel was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon for being an idle end disorderly person. She has to remain in tho Salvation Army Home for six months. DRUNKENNESS. John O’Leary and Bernard Kromen were fined £1 and 10s respectively for drunkenness.
