From Our Own Correspondent. February 8. At the S.M. Court a man named James Smith, alias Griffo, was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment on a chargo of being an idle and disorderly person. Mrs McKenzie, an old resident of Makuri, is in a critical state of health, and has been removed to tho Pahiatua hospital for treatment. In a match for tho Booth bowling cup at Featherston on Saturday three Masterton rinks defeated three Featherston rinks by 66 points to 44. The Masterton tennis club has been challenged by Pahiatua for the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association’s country cup. The match will lie played on February 15th. At the annual sports meeting at Hastwells tho principal events were won as under: 100yds handicap, H. B. McKay; 220yds, A. A. Bold; 440yds, A. Watson; half mile, W. Halberg; 150yds hurdles, A. A. Bold; high jump, D. Lozell; hop, step and jump, 0. Christensen; wrestling, P. Hansen; throwing the hammer, J. Samuels. Mr C. I. Harkness, who has been on the staff of the Pahiatua branch of the Bank of New South Wales for four years, has resigned his position, in order to follow farming pursuits in Taranaki. In a tennis match on Thursday Groytown defeated Featherston by 11 games to 9. Dr and Mrs Johnston, of Martinborough, will leave on a visit to Scotland next month, and anticipate being absent from New Zealand about two years.
