OUTBREAKS OF FIRE
TWO HOUSES BURNED AT BEMUERA. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 9. Two Remuera residences were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The outbreak occurred in a_ five-roomed house owned by Mr Cornish and occupied by Mr Pickering, in Oxford street, and spread to a six-roomed house next door owned .by Mr Byers and occupied by Mr Graham. The latter noticed the fire at 9.45 p.m. and gave the alarm, doing what ho could while awaiting the brigade. Mr Graham only saved his own furniture. The Remuera brigade took half an hour responding to the alarm. Both houses were destroyed. Each was insured in the Phoenix—Byers’s for £276, but the amount of Cornish’s insurance is unknown. SHOPS DESTROYED AT MOUTOA. Special to the “ Times.” MOUTOA, February 8. A fire broke out here on Friday night, at 12 o’clock in a shop occupied by Mr Jenkins, saddler, and spread fo a shop next door occupied by Mr Jones, motor mechanic. The former lost everything, only having sufficient time to get his wife and children to a" place of safety. Mr Jones managed to save mast of his stock. Both have their stock and furniture insured in the Norwich Union. Tho buildings were the property ot Mr A. McPherson, and were insured in £He Victoria office. Those present worked hard, and by their efforts were able to prevent tho flames spreading fo'the next building, which was only scorched.
