OTAKI TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the above was held on Friday. Mr McKegg presiding. Minutes of the previous meeting wer» read and confirmed, and correspondence was read and dealt with. From the Municipal Association of New Zealand, stating that in the year 1908 the constitution of the Municipal Association was extended so as to include town boards. For the remainder of the term fhe Otaki board would bo admitted at half the annual fee.—lt was decided to join. The Police Department wrote that it could not see its way clear to hand over section 100 (opposite Rank of Australasia) as a site for the board’s offices, as it would probably bo needed later for Government purposes. —It was decided that a deputation wait on the Minister of Justice with a view to securing the site. MERGING TEE ROAD BOARD. Mr Skerman. said he had reason to believe that many objected to sign the petition in favour of merging the road board into the county council. He considered the merging of the board a very important matter. The chairman said he understood that there were plenty of signatures, but. in the event of the road board not going out of existence, it would be necessary for the town board to do something regarding an adjustment. If the board failed to get some one the Government would send a person to adjudicate. After prolonged discussion it was decided that the Government auditor ba asked to make an adjustment of debits and credits between the town, board and road board. VALUATION. It was mentioned that on the present value the income from rates would b« -C5Ol. while there would be .£2OO from the hotels, besides special rates, taxes, tees, etc., amounting in all to nearly .£IOOO, and a suggestion was made for an overdraft. 'The chairman proposed securing a loan in preference to an overdraft, pointing out the bank’s charges were 6 per cent. LICENSE FEE. The owner of a motor-car, plying for hire, had been charged JSS by the flora' whenua County Council. It was maintained that cars should be charged a lesser amount, they giving the town a more up-to-date appearance.
