CONTROL OF CITY TRAFFIC
MAYOR OF AUCKLAND ADVOCATES ACTION. POLICE SUPERVISION APPROVED. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 7. Interviewed this afternoon on tho police control of the city traffic, the Mayor of Auckland expressed the opinion that tho idea was a capital one. “ I have,” said Mr Parr, “ on more than one occasion urged that the police should control the street traffic of tho large cities. Now that the Government has made arrangements with tho Wellington City Council there is no reason why they should not make arrangements with Auckland. I shall take an early opportunity to get the opinion of the council on the idea. The sum of £SOO a year seems to me rather a heavy charge. “ I do not know whether we would be prepared to pay so much, but as the city is growing monthly by the inclusion of suburbs probably the expenditure will not bo seriously felt by Greater Auckland. Wo should, of course, still have to retain an officer or two for the purpose of issuing license fees and to examine motor-cars, cabs, and so forth, but the principle of police control is absolutely right.”
