MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY .7. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) HARBOUR BOARD PROPERTY STOLEN. Wilfred Beswick Willis, a Harbour Board employee, pleaded guilty to stealing on various occasions a bundle of wire, a quarter side of leather, a breast brace, a steel wedge, a pipe cutter, and a quantity of -brass, copper, and iron fittings, of the value of £6, the property of the board. Chief Detective Broberg stated that the accused had been employed in a responsible position by the board. A considerable quantity of valuable property was in the man’s charge. Most of tho goods stolen had been recovered. Accused was married, but had no fam-. ily. Mr O. Beere, accused’s counsel, asked that leniency be extended as this was the man’s first lapse. His Worship inflicted a fine of £5, and ordered that tho value of the property not recovered should be paid. Default was fixed at a month’s imprisonment. COTTERILL’S CASE. John James Cotterill appeared for sentence on a charge of stoaling_ two watches and a gold mounted ribbon guard, of a total value of £2 14s 6d, the property of John Atkinson. Last week accused stole the articles from the clothing of Atkinson, who was working as a painter on the Arahnra. Mr H. F. O’Leary, who appeared for Cotterill, pointed om> that the offender was not quite twenty-one years of ago. He had been out from the Old Country about twelve months. For a week he had been in gaol, therefore counsel suggested that this might bo taken into consideration by his Worship when imposing sentence. Cotterill was fined £l, in default twenty-four hours. BROKE HIS ORDER. John I’ryco was fined £3, with costs £1 Is, in default fourteen days, on three charges of breaking the conditions of his prohibition order. JUMPED OFF MOVING TRAIN. S. Remington Jones was fined 10s, with costs 13s, for quitting a train whilst it was in motion. WANDERING STOCK. For allowing stock to wander Cecil Sraham was fined 10s, with costs 11s, .'’rank Jones, James Stewart, and Robert Raynor os, with costs 11s, and William Rice and Norah Ryan 6s, with costs 9s. CHILD AND-SCHOOL. Thomas Henry Price was fined 2s, with costs ss, for failing to send a child to school.
