For some time yesterday afternoo* a thick pall of smoke hung over the city, and seemed to come from a southwesterly point. The atmosphere became darkened and the sun was of a reddish colour. No “burns” were reported a* having taken place on the ranges in the direction of Terawhiti, therefore it is .bought that the smoke originated from ■i big fire in the South Island. The Miramar Labour party wrote to the Miramar Borough Council last evening suggesting that writs for, the return of nine - councillors should be issued for nexf election. The council decided to take no action in the matter at present, but Councillor Grigg gave notice to move on March 6th that the suggestion be given effect to.
