GROWTH OF POPULATION
OVER 27,000 LAST YEAR. It is estimated by tho Government Statistician that the population of New Zealand at the end of last year was 1,114,987, of whom 49,844 were Maoris. Tho increase in the white population during the year was 27,139. The excess of births over deaths was 18,212 and that of arrivals over departures was 8,927. The number of Chinese in New Zealand at December 31st last was put at 2520. The rate of increase works out at 2.65 per oent. Tho birth rate for tho Dominion in 1912 was 26.48 per 1000 of mean population, and tho death rate 8.95, as against 25.97 and 9.39 respectively in 1911. The deaths in 1912 wore less than the number registered in 1911 by 239, and the rate per 1000 fell from 9.39 to 8.95. Tho number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1912 is estimated at 9250, giving a rate of 8.90 per 1000 of the mean population, against 8826 and 8.70, tho actual number and rate in 1911.
