TRAM FARES TO MIRAMAR
A SUGGESTED REDUCTION. COUNCIL REJECTS THE PROPOSAL. The question of reducing tho tram way fares on tho Miramar line came before tho Miramar Borough Council last night. Councillor Grigg moved that on and after February 15th tho fares on tho Miramar borough tram line be Id for all cars. He thought that under tho present system they were not only losing money, but also population. What he desired to do was te make tho transit cheaper and better.. If they looked into recent reports and compared, say, the periods from December 9th to December 22nd for tho last three years, they would find that their loss was increasing, and he thought if they cheapened the faros they would encourage more people to come to tho borough and so increase their revenue. Their loss from January to April, 1911, was £149 17s 3d, and in 1912, when tho faro was 2d, £253 19s 3d. Tho only way to get over this was to make the faros cheaper. Councillor Bowie pointed out that Councillor Grigg was making a mistake in comparing tho last three successive years as tho same conditions did not prevail. Tho falling off could bo put down entirely to the closing down of Wonderland and to the pony racing being stppped. Councillor Telford thought the matter could well bo left over until they got their own power. Councillor Grigg said that it was not so much the Id as that they were losing 100 per oent. of their visitors. They were driving them away to Island Bay and Lyall Bay. The Deputy-Mayor (Councillor Bell) remarked that he thought Councillor Grigg was not quite correct. The motion was lost.
