SHORTER THAN PANAMA

TEHUANTEPEC RAILWAYS. A RIVAL SERVICE TO THE FAR EAST. LONDON, February 4. Negotiations are proceeding between Pearson and Son, Limited, and the Mexican Government, for the sale of the former’s interests in the Tehuantepec railways, which, it is claimed, offer a shorter service to the Far Bast than by the Panama Canal. DOCKING ACCOMMODATION. COMMISSION AS TO NOUMEA. (Received February 5, 9.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 5. Noumea advicea state that a commission has been appointed to inquire into the question of increasing the docking accommodation in view of the opening of tho Panama Canal. Pearson and Son, Limited, are contractors for public works, and are partners and managers of the Tehuantepec National Railway, of two harbours, and a dry dock in Mexico for fifty years from 1897, in conjunction with the Mexican Government. The railway is 205 miles long, connecting the opposite sides of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. It was proposed to build a railway for the transport of laden ships. By this rente tho distance between San Francisco and New York would bo rather more than 1000 miles shorter than by the Isthmus of Panama, and more than 700 miles shorter than the Nicaraguan Canal route.
