PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNOR
SYDNEY, February 1. The Orangemen intend to send to Lord Chelmsford (tho retiring Governor) direct tho protest against Sir Gerald Strickland’s appointment as Governor, which Mr McGowen, the Premier, declined to forward.
A message on January 30th said: The Premier (Mr McGowen) referring to tho resolution of the Grand Lodgo of Orangemen of New South Wales protesting against the appointment of Sir Gerald Strickland as Governor of New South Wales,, he being a Roman Catholic, whereas the population of the State is overwhelmingly Protestant, said: ”1 have not acted as the Grand lodge desires, as medium between them and tho Xing’s representative, as the Government does not consider the resolution a proper communication for It to forward to the King’s representative, reflecting, as it does, upon his Majesty’s prerogative and impugning the loyalty of the State.”
