CITY BURGLARIES
FIVE CHARGES AGAINST CONSTABLE. TO BE HEARD NEXT WEDNESDAY Since Detective Mason arrested Con stable Charles Alfred Remmers last Fri ' day night, on a charge of stealing a hat four fresh cases of burglary have been discovered, and Remmers has been accused of committing all tho offences, j Before Dr A. McArthur, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, ho was charged: (1) That between January 4th J and 24th, he stole ono gentleman’s ] cap, four fancy underveste, four shirts, I eight linen handkerchiefs, six pairs oi flecks, three silk mufflers, twenty-one silk handkerchiefs, five silk collars, seventeen assorted ties, four elastic armlets, and one snede elastic belt, of a total value of £l6 6s sd, the property ol Alexander Henderson Wallace (of Wallace and Gibson’s); (2) that on January Ist he stole one gentleman’s gold wristwatch, valued at £5 ss, belonging to Cyril Edward Barkes; (3) that between January 4th and 24th he stole five soft shirts, ono tie, one silk handkerchief, of tho value of £2 19s, tho property of Herbert Henry Price; (4) that on oi about Jauuary 22nd he broke and entered tho premises of Samuel George Rosa by night, and stole twenty gold bangles, eleven gold wedding rings, one silver card case, twenty-six gold brooches, two ladies’ gold watches, eighteen gold signet rings, nine gold pendants, two pairs of gold sleevo links, twentysix gold tie pins, and one pair of gold '"'’■rings, of a total value of about £140; and (5) that on or about Jami ary 4th he stole one gentleman’s hat, valued at £1 IQs, the property of Alexander Henderson Wallace.
As mentioned above one of tho new ’’■irr'ps relates _ to goods taken from Wallace and Gibson’s mercery shop, another to a burglary at the premises of Herbert Price, outfitter, another to the theft of jewellery from the shop of S. G. Boss, and the other to the theft of Parkes’ wrist-watch. On the charge of stealing the hat Remmers was remanded last Saturday. Yesterday Chief-Detective Broberg mentioned that when Remmers first appeared it was thought that the two charges in regard to tho thefts from Wallace and Gibson’s and Price’s shops would be preferred againso tbo accused, but in tho meantime evidence in support of the charges of breaking and entering Ross’s shop, and of stealing Parkes’ watch had come to hand, consequently the prosecution was not yet prepared to go on with all tho charges. It was decided that the cases come up for hearing next Wednesday morning. Chief-Detective Broberg to accused: Do you want bail? Accused; No, sir.
