BOWLING
AVELLINGTON CENTRE TOURNAMENT. NORWOOD’S TEAM WEST THE FLNAL. The Wellington Centro tournament, which, owing no bad weather has been dragged out far beyond expectations, was brought to a conclusion yesterday on tho Wellington Club’s green. Tho sun shono brightly, but a boisterous nor’-wester interfered a good deal with the accuracy of the play. A very largo “gallery” of keenly interested spectators watched the play, every good shot being warmly applauded. The rival teams were skipped by Webb (Wellington) and Norwood (Victoria). Tho latter opened with a single, Webb missing with his drive. On the second head Norwood’s No. 2 and 3 drew nice shots, AA'ebb again failing to alter things with a drive. In the third Norwood looked like getting a 3, but a narrow shot by AVebb pushed up s short one close to the jack. In tho fourth head a lucky trail by AVebb’s No. 2 from a wick gave him 3, Norwood taking one out with a shooter, tho score here being 3-all. In tho fifth, by the aid of a good run through and rest, Norwood got a two off his own bat, AVebb failing to alter. Two more went to tho Victorias in tho next ond, which put them 4 up, but a fine shot by Webb in the folknving end, which ran out Norwood’s shot bowl, gave the AVellington men 3, Norwood playing weak for a save. In tho eighth each man in the two teams drew beautifully, and a pretty head left Norwood lying one. The ninth was another very close head, Norwood getting another single, although Webb cam© within an ace of resting the shot bowl. The score was now 9 to 6 in favour of A r ictoria, and a lucky wick by the No. 2 left Norwood lying 3, but clever play by Webb saved the position and bagged a single. Tho AVellington team now seemed to break up somewhat, while all the AGotorias were playing really well. AVebb constantly found the game lying against him and his fast ones or dead draws just missed. In tho 11th he had 3 against him, and, missing his drive, failed with a draw. At the next end Norwood’s men each drew a shot, the skip going for position. Webb, who was being asked to do a tremendous lot, failed to mend matters, and another 3 went to Victoria. Norwod bagged another single at tho next, making the score 16 to 7in his favour. AVebb managed a 2 at the 14th, but after that Norwood wont right away, bagging 2,2, I, and 5 on successive heads, and placing the issuo beyond all doubt. A single went to Wellington at the 19th, their opponents getting it back at tho nest. Webb, after a dead head, got a 3 at the last end, Norwood thus winning by 14 points. The victory was well deserved, because it was in no 'sense duo to luck. Each member of the winning team played better than his individual opponent, tho Wellington men showing nothing like the good form that had carried them so far through the tournament. The teams were: Victoria Townsley, Godber, Ingram, Norwood (s), 27. AVellington—Grenfell, Fooke, Thomson, Webb (s), 13.
