EASTER CARNIVAL
GALA DAY AT LYALL BAY. The committee of the corporation staff has informed the Mayor that it is arranging a general meeting of the staff at an early date to make plans for assisting the citizens’ carnival at Easter. The Mayor met the Wellington centre of the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association at To Aro baths last evening, together with representatives of the'Sports committee of the carnival, and discussed the matter of the suggested gala day at Lyall Bay. The outcome of the meeting will. be that the sports committee’s representatives will recommend their committee to leave the arrangement of the function (which it is proposed to hold on the Saturday prior to Easter) in the hands of the Wellington centre. The Mayor has strongly recommended the centre to invito all surf clubs to cooperate with a view to making the day a success. The centre has informed the committee that it is probable Healy and Wickham, the well-known Australian swimmers, will bo in Wellington and available for the gala day. It is pretty certain, at all events, that one of these swimmers will be present. The question of holding a carnival at Te Aro baths was discussed, but it was thought best to let the centre consider the Lyall Bay project first. From the tone of the meeting, it was evident that the Swimming Association and those connected with the sport are enthusiastic supporters of the carnival movement. The stalls committee met last night, when collectors of goods reported satisfactory progress.
