THE SCHOLARSHIP QUESTION
CATHOLIC FEDERATION’S PROTEST. The Dominion executive of the New Zealand Catholic Federation, at a meeting hold in Wellington last night, passed unanimously the following resolution :
“That the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Catholic federation hereby protests against the decision of the Wellington Education Board in denying to scholarship winners the option of holding their scholarships at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, and declares snch decision to be a manifest injustice not only to such scholarship
winners, hut also to that institution itself, for, among others, the following reasons:
“(a) That St. Patrick’s College is, as well as other Catholic secondary schools in the Dominion, quite equal, in efficiency of tuition and equipment, to the State institutions.
“(b) That the Canterbury, Westland, Taranaki, and Wanganui Education Boards have decided that snch scholarships may be held at the Catholic secondary schools in their respective districts.”
DISCUSSION AT WANGANUI
Special to the “ Times.” WANGANUI, January 110
The Wellington Education Board forwarded a resolution to the Wanganui Board last night objecting to granting permission to hold scholarships at the Catholic schools. The chairman pointed out tliat no objection had been made to the scholarships being held at St. Patrick’s College (Catholic) or tho Collegiate School (Church of England) in the past, and while pupils attending Catholic primary schools were allowed to compete for scholarships it seemed invidious to make tho distinction suggested.
Mr O’ Dea, while strongly supporting the maintenance of the present education system, agreed with the chairman.
Messrs Bennett and Dixon believed in the maintenance of the present education system, but thought there was no need to deal with tho scholarship question until an application was before them. Tho letter was received.
