EASTER CARNIVAL
SOME OF THE PUNS MANY OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE RECEIVED. Offers of assistance for the Citizens’ Easter Carnival are being received in gladdening numbers by the Mayor and other executive officers. The Mayor rtated yesterday that everything pointed to the carnival being a most successful function.
At a meeting of the sports committee, which was also attended by the University tournament committee, it was decided to recommend the executive of the carnival to grant the use of Newtown Park for a period of lour or five hours on Easter Monday afternoon to the tournament committee, which might embody the sports items on the general programme. The sports committee has drawn up a programme which will fully occupy lour hours on one ox tho afternoons. The committee is also prepared to do a great deal more if time is available for the events.
It was originally proposed to hold a swimming tournament at Te Aro Baths in connection with the Easter Carnival, bnt this idea will probably now be dropped in favour of one which is expected to be much more attractive. This evening at Te Aro Baths a meeting of the Wellington Centre of tho New Zealand Swimming Association will bo held, when representatives from tho various surfing clubs will submit A proposition to have a big gala day at Lyall Bay to raise funds in aid of the carnival movement. It will be suggested that the Saturday prior to tho carnival should bo selected. Mr Bevy, of tiie Old Boys’ Swimming Club, says ho can almost guarantee that Messrs Wickham and Healy, of Sydney, who will be in Wellington for the Old Boys’ Club carnival, will remain long enough to take part in tho events at Lyall Bay. The Wellington Housewives’ Union has decided to assist in the carnival by establishing a stall, on which will be offered for sale all sorts of articles of household use.
Arrangements for the Senior Cadet tourney, which is to be held in conjunction with the carnival, have been put in hand. A committee, consisting of Majors Potter and Mathieson, Captains Richardson, McFarlane, Johnston, and Frandi, and Lieutenants Duffy, Hugo, and Ruck (secretary) was appointed to carry out details.
It was intimated that several companies had signified their intention of competing. Recommendations were adopted to the effect that the competitions consist of physical and squad drill, rifle exercises, and route marching, for teams of twelve cadets, under a X.C.0., semaphore signalling, each team to consist of four cadets, and a bugle competition. The company in Area Group 5 securing the highest number of points in the first four events mentioned above will win the Championship Cup, to bo held for one year. It was proposed to hold a raarcl/past of Senior Cadets, and also a massed display of physical drill by about 300 cadets, who will be trained by Staff Sergeant-Major Parkes and Lieutenant Duffy.
