NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By “ Tho Judge.”)
Those who are in the habit of _ watching tho training gallops at EUerslie have been looking forward to seeing Toreador in a race, as ho had been timed to do something extra special in the galloping line. Seemingly in this case tho time •test was a reliable indication, for yesterday Toreador made his appearance in tho Ferry Handicap at Takapuna, and he fairly spreadeagled the field, winning pulling up by four lengths.
Jolie Pille, who won the Takapuna Cup, of 400 sots, yesterday, had only just returned from a trip to Taurauga, where sho won the Cup and living Handicap, so that it is evident she is very well just now. This daughter of Soitlt and Merry maid is evidently a very useful galloper, as last season she won' live races and was placed six times, whilo this year sho has much more than paid her way. Makura made an exhibition of the field in the Maiden Plate at Takapuna, for sho is reported to hare won by several lengths. Makura is a four-year-old brown filly by Wairiki from Idas (Seaton llelaval—-Ida). Ida-s in her day could gallop with the best of them, hut was a very hot-headed mare who proved difficult to manage. She won the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes and the, Avondale Cup. Makura was her first foal. Mr Robert Duder is having the most exasperating luck with his mare i.a Reina. It will he romembe'od that sho ran BobrikoS to a neck in the Auckland Cup, was second to Labour Bay in the Summer Cup, and second to Antoinette in the A.11.G. Handicap. ‘Yesterday in the Takapuna Cun the Seult mare was in her usual place behind Joke Pille. To bo just beaten in the four biggest summer handicaps, in Auckland in snccC'S'on reads like hard luck. The North Shore sportsman is one of the philosophical sort who can bear the slaps of the blind goddess with a smiling face.
Perhaps they will soon he changed for a hand shake.
The Winton Jockey Club has accepted a tender for a new grandstand, and tao work is to bo pushed on with at mice. Tho new improvements will cost £2590. Evidently the southern club has no intention of being left behind in the march of progress.
Corazon has been put into work again to be prepared for winter steoplochasing. Six William Russo!fin? jumper is quite sound again, and it is hoped that ho will stand a solid preparation, as he is one of our best across tie big obstacles.
It is said that Lady Hontoa’s enlarged fetlock joint is commencing to trouble her at times and she has to got a hose on it every day. Although rather unruly at the harrier the Soult mare is *> smart galloper, and it is to be hoped oho will continue to stand training.
It is probable that Bally Shannon and Negative will be sent up to compete at tho Hawera meeting. Their recent form docs not point to the trip being a very profitable one, but one never knows what may happen in racing.
Mr F. Dorset originally bought tho Wellington Cup winner Sar Solo for the modest outlay of 30gns. This was at Hie sale of the Manawatu Stud Company's yearlings in 1908. As tho hay son of Sir Laddo and Wepener has since won £I7OO in stakes ho was a remarkably cheap horse.
Mr F. E. Higgins, of Auckland, has patented a waik-np starting machine. The model is to bo inspected by the A.R.O. committee.
That useful galloper Mulga Bill is in regular work again at Hawera, looking all the better for his respite from toil. Two of the stipendiary stewards, Messrs Macmahon and Gibson, are noting at tho Takapuna meeting, and will afterwards come south for the Egmont and Taranaki meetings. Mr Gordon will be at Riooarton on Saturday for the 0.J.0. meeting, and may afterwards attend the fixture at Te Kuiti. It is said that the Avondale Jockey Club, which already possesses a fine, wellappointed course, is about to spend some £2900 in improvements, principally buildings. The Chokebore filly Judith has been showing pace on the track at Riccarlon of late. She is a bay two-year-old filly by Martian—Hebrew Maid. Parachute, another two-year-old in the same stable, has also been going well. Referring to the accident to Pawky Lass the “Press” says: “She was sent a good half-pace gallop on the sand, but whei turning into tho straight sho came down, and it was at once noticed that something serious was amiss. An examination showed that the filly had broken one of her forelegs, the pastern bein" badly shattered- Mr Mitchell was quickly on the scene with his gnn, but it was at least three-quarters of an hour before he could obtain authority to put the filly out of her misery. Pawky Lass was a useful three-ycar-old filly, by Connie Chiel—Starsbot, and showed a good deal of pace in the early part of last year. She was first seen .under silk at the Dunedin spring meeting in the Dunedin Stakes, in which she finished third to Autumnus and May Dalrymple. At the same meeting she won the Dominion Handicap, four furlongs, in SOsec, defeating Anna Carlovna. Pawky Lass was breed by Messrs Pyne and Boyle, and at the time of her death was the property of the latter gentleman.” Mr G. D. Greenwood, who is now in England, went to tho Nowmarket sales, where he bought three mares. They are Vicclla (Velcs —Sweet Duchess), Field Glass (Winkfield —Florence Edith), and Addra (Goldfinch —Ability). Vicella is in foal to. lan (St. Serf—Berengaria). Field Glass is in foal to Acclaim (Araphion— Claque). Addra, who was bred in the United States, is in foal to Marcovil (Marco —Lady Vilikins). The three mares were to have been shipped from London early this month. CHRISTCHURCH NOTES Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 29. Training work at Ricoarton this morning was uninteresting. No fast work was accomplished. C. Emerson has been engaged to ride Tannhauser in tho Midsummer Handicap. FORBURY TROTTING MEETING Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 29. Tho Forbury Park Trotting Club's autumn meeting commenced to-day in fine but rather cold weather- Tho attendance was excellent and the track was in fair order, notwithstanding heavy rain early in the week. The totalisator investments were £16,015 10s, as against £12,479 for the corresponding day last year. Owing to the conditions being unfavourable Emmeline did not attempt to break her track record of 2min 8 3-ssec.
