NOTES ON THE RACING Special to the “ Times.” Tie Maiden Plate, which set the ball rolling, proved a good thing for Makura, who had been galloping well. Sho was in front throughout, and easily beat Allegation by a couple of lengths. St. Louis was a fair third
and Nimrod fourth. The favourite, Almeida, ran badly. Glad Tidings and Monolino were the selections in the Zealandia Handicap, and the former won, after a fine race, from Bow Bells, who had all the worst of the running, and finished within a head of the winner. Had sho jumped out with the others she would have won. Rob the Ranter was third, with Lucille and Mouoline close up. Shebeen was most in demand in the Hauraki Hurdles, which proved to bo the best of good things for her. Over the first half-mile she was running last, but then began to move ujj, and a long way from homo sho had the field weii beaten, and eventually won easily by four lengths from Tiri, who ran well throughout. Explosive was a . poor third, and Pip fourth. Marangai fell, while Watchchain was never sighted. The Cup was a fine race to watch, and terminated in a good finish. La Reina was favourite, and sho gave her backers a good run. Scorch essayed to win from end to end, and six furlongs from home she was out on hei own, the next being Efoctrakoff, with Tiresome at the tail of the field. However, the pace set began to tell on Scorch, and she was done with before the straight was reached, where Joho Fille had taken charge from La Reina and Electrakoff. In the run homo Jolie Fille succeeded in keeping off the opposition, and won by n length tioni La Reina, with Tiresome, who put in some great work over the concluding stages, close up third. Electrakoff was interfered with when putting in a run in the straight.
Toreador was best hacked in the Ferry Handicap, and ho made an exhibition of the field, at one time being eight lengths irl front. In tho run home ho was steadied, and won by four lengths from Phosphorus, who just cut Tripoli out of second money. The othors were never dangerous. In fact, there was only one in it. ' The Calliope Handicap was only an exercise canter for L/ady Alicia, who waited on her opponents till tho straight was reached, when she soon settled them. Marshal was an easy second, tho other pair, Christine and King Lupin, being outclassed. ,
Miss Explosion was looked upon as tho best in the Orewa Hurdles, but when bad horses meet there is always room for a surprise, and this was again the case, the little-fancied Surplus going to the front at the start and making a one-horse race of it. He won, easing up, by four lengths from the favourite, who just lasted long enough to defeat Hyperion. Seaman ran well for a mile, but then tired badly.
In tho Stewards’ Handicap Waiorewa and Blue Garment were most in demand. Mondine and Overtime raced in the lead in the early stages, but in tho run home Overtime drew away, and won nicely from Worcester, with Waiorowa third. Solus fell in the. straight. Overtime raced well at EUerslie. Solus broke a leg and had to be destroyed. WEIGHTS FOE SATURDAY.
