DUNEDIN

Press Association

DUNEDIN, January 29.

His Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool, accompanied by the Countess of Liverpool, paid his first official visit to Dunedin to-day, and was warm13' welcomed by the Alaj'or and Councillors and a largo crowd of citizens outside the Town Hall.

An address of welcome was presented to his Excellency by the Alayor, who said it was at all times a pleasure to welcome the Governor of the Demi nion, as he occupied tho position of a personal link with the Alotberland. In Lord Liverpool’s case there was an. other reason why tho people should extend a warm ■welcome to him, namely. that while serving in tho Royal Navy his Excellency's father had assisted in restoring peace and good order when trouble reigned in the North Island.

On rising to reply his Excellency received an ovation. ITo thanked the people for their very cordial welcome, and sincerely trusted that not only during his term of ollice, but long after he had passed from these shores, the same feeling of attachment to the Motherland that now existed would remain in the hearts of the people. It was ono of the distinguishing features of these islands, and ho hoped it would continue to hold the foremost place in the hearts of the people of New Zealand.

To-morrow Lord and Lady Liverpool will be driven round the city, and on Friday they leave for Wellington.
