AUSTRALIA’S ANNIVERSARY
THOUSANDS WEAR WATTLE IN
LONDON,
CROWDED GATHERING AT COLONIAL INSTITUTE. LONDON, January 27. The newspapers paid attention in their columns to the 12dth anniversary of the foundation of Australia.
Thousands of persons wore wattle in the streets.
There was a crowded gathering at the Royal Colonial Institute. Sir George Reid, Australian High Commissioner, in a speech, said ho regretted Mr Deakin's ill-health and retirement. Mr Deakin had devoted his brilliant gifts to public life, and had rendered memorable services to his State, the Commonwealth, and the Empire. Mr Joseph Cook, added Sir George, was a worthy successor to Mr Deakin. The speaker then summarised facts showing Australia’s remarkable progress. . There are general hopes that the celebration will be repeated on a large scale in 1914.
The Corporation of Bath decorated the bronze tablet in Governor Philip’s residence -with wattle blossom.
