MONTHLY’ MEETING OF THE
BOARD,
The Wellington Education Board held its monthly meeting yesterday. Present; Messrs R. Lee (chairman), J. Kebbell, A. W. Hogg, W. Allan, J. G. IV. Aitken, H. Freeman, I. Moss, and W. H. Field. FINANCE. , Tho chairman, referring to the board’s finances, said the figures disclosed a debit balance of £946, as compared with a previous credit balance ot £754. This was wholly accounted for by 7 the fact that moneys due to the board had not yet come in. There had also been considerable demands, since last meeting, on their funds, due to the board having met early in December last and charges had come in between whiles. GRANTS. Tho department notified the following grants: Featherston South, residence, £450 ; Mikimiki, residence, £450 ; Tablelands, £373 10s; Kaiwaiwai, improvements to residence. £129 10s. In regard to teachers’ residences, the department wrote stating that improvements must, owing to heavy commitments, .be deferred. WORKS. The works committee recommended that the following be authorised: Makuri, grant for asphalting; Island Bay, wind screens and drainage ; Clyde quay, lavatory basins, etc. ; Rongokokako, residence, papering two rooms; Pahautanui, residence papering; Peton© U.H.S., papering. Price’s building; Petono D.H.S., infant department, installation of gas, half cost; Featherston, residence, tubs, copper, etc.; Kiibirnie, concrete channel north boundary; Khandallah, asphalt, half cost; Ngaio, asphalting paths, half cost; Horoeka, gKroKund improvements, half cost. Ngaio.—That application lor railing on bank be deferred.
Tenders.—That the following tenders be accepted: Te Aro, asphalt, Sargent and Elton; Lansdowne, hyloplate screen, C. E. Daniell; Masterton, alteration and repairs to desks, W. J. Wise ; Kakariki. painting school, J. H. Rashleigh; Petone W., science room, Lowin and Tremain j office, telephone, Turnbull and Jones, additional. Roseneath.—That deposit, £2 14s, be returned.
That regarding tenders for Taraiahi West and Carrington residences, and South Featherston school and residence, the secretary communicate with the Education Department. Sites.—That failing immediate payment of certain arrears, the board’s solicitors be instructed to collect the amounts due. South Wellington: That plans of proposed grading and building, with estimates, be transmitted to tho department. Kakariki: That tho portion of tho site not required for school purposes be let to Mr R. Bartosh for five years at £1 per annum. Heretaunga: That the board is unable meantime to accede to the request of the petitioners, having made arrangements with the department for enlargement of the Upper Hutt school. Eketahuna; Unoccupied section—that tho secretary arrange with the Agricultural Department regarding destruction of noxious weeds. Kaituna: That tho board is unable to effect repairs to bridge, but that the secretary communicate with the Tourist Department. Whareama: That the recommendation of the clerk of works for the construction of an open drain be adopted. The report was adopted.
