foreigner,
At Lvttelton on Monday the chief engineer of the Mararoa had reason to discharge one of the firemen. A foreigner, who is a member of the Seamen's Union, applied to fill_ the vacancy, and was engaged. ' Nine of the firemen and trimmers then expressed a disinclination to , work alongside a foreigner, and they gave notice to leave tho vessel at Wellington yesterday. Before 8 o’clock yesterday morning there were four applicants for tho jobs, and during the day fully twenty men were available. Nino new men were signed on, and the malcontents paid off. Two of the latter, who objected to work with the foreigner, are, it is said, foreigners themselves.
