PROSECUTIONS IN CHRIST-

CHURCH

CHRISTCHURCH, January 28,

In the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, George Roper was charged that “On January 21st, on certain licensed premises, to wit, the Rotherfield Hotel, being a bookmaker, he did bet on the result of a horserace to bo held in Wellington.” Koper was also charged with betting on the licensed premises of the Zetland Hotel.

After hearing the evidence his Worship said he would convict Roper, inflicting a fine of £4O. The second charge was withdrawn. Archibald Hunt, charged that at Christchurch on January 22nd he did keep a common gaming-house in Chancery lane, was convicted and fined £2O.
