BRITISHERS IN AUSTRALIA.
(Received January 27, 10.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 2/. The tennis matches were continued in hot weather. . Lowe won the first set against Dunlop, and the first game of the second sot. Dunlop then retired ill. Lowe was brilliant, his serving and placing being first-class. Brookes won tho first set against Park, 33 aces to 25. Brookes’ play was dazzling. His serving and volleying were perfect. Brookes lost tho first service gamo in the second sot, and was unable to recover leeway, Parke winning tho set by 39 aces to 32. Brookes secured the third set. The Britishers desired the singles to be the best of five. Parke was especially desirous in this respect. They urged that the victory of Brookes against Parke at Sydney in two straight sets had been acclaimed as re-establish-ing - Brookes’ supremacy, whereas it was not a championship test at all. Brookes declined to play unless the committee’s original arrangement, of the best in three be adhered to. The Britishers finally agreed to accept tfiis arrangement. VICTORIA WESTS. (Received January 28, 1.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 27. Heath and Campbell played very •mindly. Campbell was intermittently brilliant at the net. Heath was solid. Results: Lowe beat Dunlop, B—6, I—o. Dunlop retired. Brookes beat Parke, 6—3, 3—6, 6—^-3. Heath and Campbell beat Beamish md Lowe, 6—4, 6-—2, 6—3, Scores now stand: Victoria, 3 rubbers, 10 sets, 87 games. Britain 3 rubbers, 8 sets, 85 games. Victoria thus won.
