A LIBEL ACTION
LIEUTENANT BRANDON WITHDRAWS. BERLIN, January 26. Lieutenant Brandon has withdrawn his libel action against the “Westphalen Gazette.” The latter has declared that it was misinformed as to Brandon’s attempted escax>e.
Lieutenant Brandon, an English officer, was in December, 19W, sentenced to lour years' imprisonment on charges of espionage. In February of last year it was reported by several German, newspapers that Brandon had attempted to escape from the fortress at Wescl. it was stated that ho filed through his window -bars and reached the courtyard below by means of a rope, but was recaptured by a sentry. Later, the Commandant of the fortress and Brandon's friondvS denied the alleged attempt at escape. Brandon then brought an action against one of the newspapers and secured a verdict of 80s. Tho court, however, mitigated the damages, holding that a spy was unworthy of {special protection by the law.
