TRAMWAYS AT PETONE

WILL SYNDICATE CARRY OUT

WORK?

MATTER DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.

The position regarding tramways at l/etone was briefly referred to by the Mayor at tho Borough’ Council meeting last evening. “The council is familiar with tho Tacts of tho case,” ho remarked, “and *t will no doubt remember that a committee was set up to negotiate with tho solicitors for the syndicate. Negotiations were carried on and certain matters were in dispute, but we tnally agreed on these, and the matter was left in tho hands of tho two solicitors, Mr Cook for the council ,i nd Mr Pctherick for the syndicate, to draft an agreement for submission to tho council. It is not tho fault of our borough solicitor that this has not been done. With a view of discussing what is the matter the solicitor for the syndicate should be asked if it is tho intention of tho syndicate to proceed with tho construction ot tho tramways within tho borough, and I movo to that effect,”

Councillor Short said they had a penal clause put in tho agreement stating that the syndicate would be liable to £2OO if the tramways were not started within twelve months. ,Ho asked if the council could get satisfaction in regard to this. Surely tho work of tho council was worth £2OO. Councillor Brocklebank said a committee had been set up in regard to this matter, and ho moved as an amendment that it be discharged, as it .was :oo late for tho council to do anything because its term of office would expire n a few weeks.

Councillor List: There may bo another syndicate willing to take np this work. How much will the legal expenses como to?

Tho Mayor: About two guineas. Wo have no claim on tho £2OO because there is no agreement. Councillor Brocklebank withdrew his amendment and stated he would make t a notice of motion for next meeting, the motion was carried.
